While Swimmers Fled Danger, Popular Image Captures Lifeguard Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, a permanent inhabitant of Bondi, views the renowned beach as her own backyard. On that fateful weekend evening, she, similar to other others in the area, detected cracking sounds reverberating around the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I considered it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. She left her apartment, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the slope still dripping wet, she became aware of someone coming up from behind. The person was a lifeguard, dashing towards Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while transporting a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to escape from, while holding that big kit and unshod … He moved into something that surely every fibre in your being would tell you to run in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully full throttle sprinting.”

An Iconic Image of Bravery Amidst Crisis

The image taken by Ching of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as among numerous instances of courage in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, noted that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid other rescuers, police and medical teams caring for dozens of the injured.

Local Reaction and Assistance

Doolan’s story was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the patrol base next to the site of the incident becoming a temporary treatment center. Reports indicate that other team members were also seen responding bravely, including rushing into the surf to assist people needing help.

Following the events, statements of appreciation circulated widely. A social media message conveyed gratitude for the individuals who demonstrated that “kindness will always overcome hatred”.

The group of beach patrol later shared a statement, explaining they were “processing what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your thoughtful words and support. We are touched by the kindness shown towards our personnel,” the group wrote. “Eventually, we will share our stories in the belief that it aids those affected.”

Official Recognition

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many full-time lifeguards, remarked that the staff rose to the occasion from the moment the shooting started through to late that nighttime.

“There have been so many emotional accounts, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” commented a local official.

“These individuals show dedication every day in maintaining the safety of our iconic shores safe for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and process the atrocity of this violent and horrific terrorist attack, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have witnessed in the presence of such darkness.”
