Placeholder Oscars Statuette

The Oscars ceremony will begin broadcasting solely on YouTube in 2029, signaling the most recent significant shift in Hollywood.

The organization behind the Oscars revealed the news on Wednesday, confirming that it finalized a extended contract giving the streaming service the sole worldwide broadcasting rights to the Oscars until 2033.

The awards show, scheduled for 15 March, has aired for 50 years on ABC. Starting in 2029, the ceremony will be viewable as a free live stream on the digital platform.

This is a further substantial shakeup in the entertainment world, which is grappling with studio sales and mergers, in addition to drastic slashes to movie budgets.

"Our Academy represents an international organization, and this partnership will permit us to increase availability to the work of the Academy to the most extensive international crowd imaginable - which will be positive for our film artists and the movie industry," stated organization heads in a statement.

For many years, viewership of the awards show have dropped, although there was a slight uptick in 2025, with a notable portion of Gen Z and millennial watchers tuning in from mobile devices and laptops.

In a separate statement, the head of YouTube referred to the Oscars "a key fundamental cultural institutions" and added that partnering with the Academy would "motivate a fresh wave of innovation and film lovers while remaining faithful to the Oscars' celebrated heritage".

The broadcast network, which has aired the awards since the mid-1970s, stated that it was looking forward "to hosting the event three more times" it will still host.

The move comes as large entertainment companies face challenging merger discussions. Such proposals were viewed as concerning for an business that has seen drastic cuts over the recent period.

Similar to big production houses, cable networks have faced issues as the viewers has shifted towards on-demand video instead.

The platform securing the license to the Oscars further suggests that dependence on online services will carry on increasing.
