Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these drugs should be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Use

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
