The 2026 cars are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious than this year.

The world of Formula 1 has introduced the official language that will be used to reference the advanced features of its revolutionary 2026 technical rules.

The sport is implementing what is arguably the largest rules overhaul in its long history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which retain the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher electrical capacity, driving significant developments in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, competitors will tactically deploy battery power – including during qualifying laps – to extract the optimal performance.

Extensive fan consultation were undertaken with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which terminology would improve understanding of the main elements of the new regulations.

The primary aim was to present a series of complex new areas of the sport as easy to grasp as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, older technical labels for some systems – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in preference for straightforward terms that clearly indicate the actual function of the system.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that drivers will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding power usage, energy recovery, and conservation.

The 2026 rules mandate a range of settings that will be visually displayed on television graphics to aid the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Overtake Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a driver is close behind the leading car to assist with an overtaking maneuver.
  • Boost Mode: This is a manual battery discharge from the energy recovery system that can be utilized during attack or defence. It delivers the pilot peak output at the activation of a control.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Adjustable Aero: Both the nose and rear wings change configuration – flattening on the long straight sections for minimal air resistance and higher speed, and sealing in the bends for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: Cars can replenish their battery with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only reduced throttle is required.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The vehicles for the new era will be more compact and lighter relative to current models, with a car length reduced by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight decreased by 30kg.

Overall downforce is expected to drop by approximately a significant margin, although constructors will undoubtedly recover some as they optimize their packages.

Drag has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will feature adjustable aero systems – both wings will open on the straights to cut resistance and enhance velocity and revert into place for maximum cornering performance.

Wheels will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the tyres themselves will be slimmer, by 25 millimetres on the front axle and three centimetres on the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The 2026 engines will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in horsepower generated by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, increasing from about 20% electrical this year.

The ERS setup is streamlined through the removal of the MGU-H, the sophisticated and pricey component that recovered energy from the exhaust turbo.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on fully sustainable fuel, created from organic sources or synthetic production methods.
