Ordinarily, recap episodes face criticism from viewers as a needless waste of time, or sometimes accepted as a necessity for series in the age of regular broadcasts. This wasn't always true, but Avatar: The Last Airbender proved it with "The Ember Island Players," a beloved episode from its final season which is now receiving a special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair release.

Highlights regarding the special release

The full Secret Lair superdrop for the soon-to-release Avatar: The Last Airbender collection was unveiled recently. It features five Secret Lairs, and although the one called "My Cabbages!" is clearly funny homage to Avatar's most famous minor character, the remaining sets feel a bit lacking creativity, aside from one remarkable entry: "The Ember Island Players."

Drawing from episode 17 of the third season of the animated show, this special set contains these specific cards:

• 1x Cursed Mirror
• 1x Mask of Memory
• 1x Thespian's Stage

The reason this installment remains memorable

Audiences of the series fondly remember this installment, which functioned as a recap of the hero Aang and his companions' journey prior to the final episode. In contrast to standard summary installments, or "clip shows," "The Ember Island Players" wasn't motivated due to production constraints or production issues. The show's makers specifically aimed to provide audiences an opportunity to revisit the show's narrative, but they decided to do it creatively.

Throughout the segment, the main characters observe a stage show inspired by their journeys on a stage located on Ember Island, named The Boy in the Iceberg. The entire performance is factually incorrect, cheesy, and completely amusing. It works because it plays with the characters' perception about themselves, setting them against against how the world (and especially the Fire Nation) perceives them. It has the right amount of meta-commentary, and it results in arguably the best adaptation of the show available to date.

Value and pricing

In terms of value, this offers a fantastic Secret Lair because of one major element: Braid of Fire. This particular card is valued between $20 and $40 on online marketplaces as of now, while for $29.99 you can snag the entire Secret Lair, or alternatively $39.99 for the shiny edition.

Magic's Avatar: The Last Airbender set is available during early access events beginning November 14 and launches globally on November 21.
