Six unlikely but brave kids confront the path of a vast and fearsome supernatural evil that has entered our existence from the outer limits of oblivion. They have no choice but to devote their lives battling it, enduring one nightmare after another in the struggle.

A Familiar Plot with a Distinctive Twist

This describes the premise, in essence, of the master of horror’s iconic book It (a standout in his career; undeniable). It parallels of Stephen King’s offspring Joe Hill’s recent horror doorstopper, in which a close-knit group call forth the ancient, deeply sinister beast the Sorrowful Monarch from the Endless Night to aid them in overcoming some antagonists. As one might expect, their arcane ceremony backfires.

Acknowledging a Family Lineage

Joseph Hillström King launched his profession going to great lengths to distance himself from his famous father, using the pseudonym he still uses today and eschewing in-person meetings with his agent (he possesses a strong similarity to his parent). However, in his newest work, he embraces it. Certain passages that intentionally mirror some of King’s most famous (“The man in black fled across the desert …”); a scene that recalls a signature King element (a riddling contest). In this epic story, Hill is delighting in his family connection, and we delight along with him.

The Cast of the Protagonists

Back to those friends: the majority are scholars at the fictional this academic setting in this northeastern locale. First is Arthur, bookish and gifted, solving Old English riddles in his leisure hours; another key figure, wealthy, clever, and known for crushing anyone who stands in his way; twins Donna and Donovan; the stunning the lovely Allie. Additionally, Gwen appears, who remains outside their academic circle, but becomes a key part of their circle as they dabble, half believing, half not, in arcane arts.

The Critical Ceremony

Arthur is, due to circumstances beyond his control, compelled to pilfer prized manuscripts from his treasured institution’s archives by a group of neighborhood thugs. This tears at his bookish heart, particularly as he’s made to take the library’s most valuable and chilling publication: the logbook of occultist Enoch Crane (put to death “for conspiring with dark forces in 1703”; the binding is fashioned from his hide). These young investigators examine the log, realize they are able to call forth what the author references as a “arrogant beast to help Arthur out with his extortion dilemma – and devote the remaining story reaping the consequences. This ancient entity will undoubtedly remove those annoying regional antagonists, but they are required to pick a different victim each year or succumb to the dragon’s wrath. As Arthur later puts it: “You invoke terrible forces, all you get is further monstrosities.”

Narrative Fluidity and Imaginative Breadth

Covering a generation, Joe Hill transitions with seamless grace across narrative styles: as the companions attempt to deal with the predicament they find themselves in by, variously, selecting clearly malevolent individuals to offer up, or hunting down ways to slay the beast themselves, we move between page-turner to dark fantasy, black-ops torture to love story to fright. One particularly memorable shift was to a quest story, within the subterranean depths under the English county, a segment infused with the fantasy maestro that was magnificently horrifying.

A Rich Tapestry of Horror and Hope

We encounter trolls – bridge-dwelling ones and internet antagonists, properly scary and expertly realized. The story includes mystic weapons and treacheries, pulse-pounding sequences of bravery and scenes of dreadful evil, both mortal and extraterrestrial. It’s a tour de force: a frightening tale that is above all a paean to the human inventiveness, and to affection and camaraderie. “We longed for a tale to embrace and {now we’ve got one|presently we possess it|currently we hold it,” says Colin as the friends assemble around a surface, making preparations to call forth their dragon into being with the strength of their collective will.

As Hill puts it in his introductory quote: “This is dragon territory”. Ensure you experience it.
