Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD shared video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with New York in March.
