Past Comments on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the conservative former military man showed little sympathy for the country's inmates.

“Why should we offer these dirtbags a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They ought to simply be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up there, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Incarceration Destination Discussion

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself ending up in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has shocked supporters, four of whom this week toured the prison in an seeming attempt to discourage the judiciary from transferring him there.

Izalci Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the elderly politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and feared his destination could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious digestive issues – the result of a almost deadly stabbing during the 2018 election race – signified it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His health is extremely serious. While visiting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells holding forty inmates: “That’s virtually one square metre per detainee.

“We spoke to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the awful food,” remarked the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

He is not the sole person speaking out prior to the one-time head of state's anticipated imprisonment.

Penning in a major daily, a different supporter, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and asserted Brazil was about to see “the biggest wrong in its past”.

“It is an injustice that erodes the souls of many of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

The lawmaker, a congressman for the current president's allied group, stated: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We want him to get proper handling – but dignified handling behind bars. He can’t persist being his own prison warden for his entire life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time applauding the severe handling of prisoners, had abruptly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has consistently asserted that human rights are not for criminals – opted to tour a prison to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he stated.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, insulting handling”.

Likely Prison Environment

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently holds about fourteen thousand inmates, his expected assigned facility appears to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “particular” detainees known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are far more comfortable than those in the main prison, although nevertheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive presidential palace, approximately a short distance away.

Based on reports, the accommodation Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and features a 12 square meter WC with a water facility and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a set and also a cooler in his quarters as long as they were provided by his family,” sources stated.
