England's Assistant Coach Reveals His Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

In the past, the England assistant coach featured at a lower division club. Now, his attention is fixed on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy in the upcoming tournament. His path from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. Barry reflects, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and it captivated him. He had found his calling.

Staggering Ascent

His advancement is incredible. Starting in a senior role at Wigan, he established a standing through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His stints with teams led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include big names such as top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the peak in his words.

“All begins with a vision … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal but then you bring it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. However, vision doesn't suffice. We have to build a systematic approach that allows us to have the best chance.”

Detail-Oriented Approach

Passion, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour all the time, he and Tuchel test boundaries. Their methods involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and building a true team. The coach highlights the England collective and dislikes phrases such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a rest,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

Barry describes himself and Tuchel as extremely driven. “We aim to control each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend most of our time to. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead of the trends but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We have to play an intricate approach that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it during that time. It’s to take it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. When the squad is away, we have to build relationships among them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, we have to see them in stadiums, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Final Qualifiers

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries – facing Serbia at home and in Albania. England have guaranteed qualification with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; instead. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum.

“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that our playing approach ought to embody everything that is good about the Premier League,” Barry explains. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the strength, the integrity. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“For it to feel easy, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely like they do every week, that feels natural and allows them to take the handbrake off. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins available to trainers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. However, in midfield on the field, that section, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared currently. They can organize – structured defenses. We are really trying to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

The coach's thirst for improvement is relentless. During his education for his pro license, he was worried about the presentation, especially as his class featured big names including former players. To enhance his abilities, he entered difficult settings imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in his home city of Liverpool, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.

He earned his license in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – about dead-ball situations, for which he analysed thousands of throw-ins – was published. Lampard was among those convinced and he brought Barry to his team at Chelsea. When Frank was fired, it said plenty that the club got rid of most of his staff while keeping Barry.

Lampard’s successor with the club was Tuchel, and shortly after, he and Barry won the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry remained with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he recruited Barry away from London to rejoin him. English football's governing body consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
