Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

Last October, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

What Comes Next

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
